The First Appearance of Elektra

Before she was dicing sandbags to her favorite Evanescence album, Elektra made a splash in her first appearance by sucker-punching Daredevil in the neck and splintering a bad guy’s cheekbone with her sai.

Hell of an entrance.

Named after the daughter of King Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra from Greek mythology, Elektra made her debut on the cover of Daredevil #168 in January 1981.

Someone was so excited to see her hit the comic-stands, they didn’t even take time to proof-read the cover, which resulted in her name being misspelled as “Elecktra.” As Marvel writer Dennis O’Neil once stated, apparently “the editor needed an editor.”

Elektra was created by Frank Miller, who based the character’s look on bodybuilding champion Lisa Lyon, saying, “[Elektra] doesn’t have Lisa Lyon’s skeleton, she’s larger, but she does have the detail of a body builder.”

Elektra spends her time in issue #168 as a bounty hunter attempting to collect on one of Daredevil’s latest catches, a thief named Alarich Wallenquist.

Matt Murdock recognizes her, which prompts a flashback to his first meeting with her at Columbia University in New York. Rest assured the issue wraps up with Elektra getting in on some elbow-to-thug-face action.
